A Calais Burgher

Inspiration Piece: The Burghers of Calais

Inspiration Artist: Rodin

I began the project by sawing the wood blocks into thin (ish) pieces. I then glued the wood veneers together using the hot glue to form a flat background after which I attached it to the canvas board with elmer’s to lend it stability. When the glue dried on the background I began to attach the pieces of wood block to rough out a general figure, also using elmer’s. I stained the wood lightly using linseed oil and rubbing with oil pastels and oil paint after which I slowly built the figure over the wood base using the modeling clay. When I found that I would not have enough clay to complete the figure’s head in the position I desired, I used the steel wire to build up the area behind the figure’s head and tried to firm it up with glue and a small piece of the rope, though this proved pretty unsuccessful. I finished the piece with some additional paint and linseed oil.
