Boys in the Pasture

by Robert Vinciguerra for Re-Invent a Work of Art (2013)

Inspiration Piece: Boys in the Pasture

Inspiration Artist: Winslow Homer

My vision was to make the Boys in the Pasture a 3-D work of art. I used the wood blocks to make a base for the diorama and the walnut panels to create the frame. Then I painted the background and midground panels. Next I made a wire apeture of the boys, covered it with clay and sculpted it. Next I drilled holes in the background panels and base to be able to slide the panels into the proper position to make the boys come to life. Finally I painted the sculture and assembled the project. I placed the panels on first, then mounted the sculpture of the boys and lined up the frame to give the 3-D effect.

I have always loved this painting and was excited about the chance to recreate my own version of it. It was painted at a time after the civil war when the country needed to come together and Homer's paintings of simple life were part of the healing process.
