Breaking Thru Five Pointz

by Nadine Charlsen for Re-Invent a Work of Art (2013)

Inspiration Piece: Street art in Five Pointz, Queens

Inspiration Artist: Monsieur Plume Raidorem

I took a photo of the street art in Queens, New York. I used the canvas board as a backing for the wall it was painted on. I cut the thin hardwood into strips to make cinderblock. for the "wall" I cut a block of the hardwood into support pieces for the nose, eyes and mouth. With the modeling clay I formed a misshapen face as if it is breaking through the wall. I used the newspaper packing and white glue to complete the "mask". I used acrylic paint to paint the face and then took small strips of the hardwood to create the 3-d hair. I used the canvas piece (folded) as the sidewalk.

The original street art is part of the Five Pointz area of Queens that is being razed for high end condos and commercial space. this will displace working artists in the existing buildings
