Calvin and Hobbes rolling in the cypress wheat field

by Seunghwui Koo for Re-Invent a Work of Art (2013)

Inspiration Piece: Calvin and Hobbes, Wheat Field with Cypress

Inspiration Artist: Bill watterson, Vincent Van Gogh

For the Van Gogh Background, I used the wood, canvas, canvas fabric, actual Mystery box itself, and wood glue. I used Acrylic to paint the background. For the wheat fields, I transformed this into a 3-D landscape. I used the canvas fabric for the 3-D wheat fields portion. The wood glue was used to attach the canvas fabric to the 3-D landscape. The 3-D landscape was created using the various wooden parts from the kit. I used the provided wire and canvas fabric for some of the trees. I also used the wooden dowel and spongy-like substance for some of the other trees. Wood glue was used to hold this together, while the wooden dowel was drilled to create the tree trunk. I used Acrylic to paint the trees.

For Calvin and Hobbes, I used the leftover wooden parts from the kit and the provided wire to create the base forms for Calvin and Hobbes. The wire was wound around the wooden parts to create these base forms. I used Sculpey for the hands and feet for both Calvin and Hobbes. I baked the Sculpey parts in a toaster oven. I used the provided clay for the bodies of Calvin and Hobbes. I strengthened the body part areas with a hot glue gun. Acrlyic was used to paint the details for Calvin and Hobbes.

For the wagon, I used wooden parts for the wagon base. Wire was used to create the handle of the wagon and the wagon wheel connectors. The wheels were created from the wooden parts. Acrlyic was used to paint the wagon.

Tool used - Drill, Saw, Glue gun, Acrylic, Toaster oven

I selected Vincent Van Gogh's 'Wheat fields with cypress' because of the soothing calm I feel when I view this piece. The yellow colors of this piece especially bring this feeling out for me. This particular piece brings me back to my hometown. I grew up in the country side, and it reminds me of the warm Autumn winds from my childhood.

Calvin and Hobbes is another one of my inspirations for this project. I view Bill Watterson's comic strip as a work of art.
Art to me is an expression and creation designed for our souls and mental well-being. For me, Calvin and Hobbes fosters a feeling of happiness and warmth which I appreciate when viewing this work. This comic strip stirs positive emotions within me, and I had pictured this scene of Calvin and Hobbes riding in their wagon in the background of Van Gogh's work as a combination of 2 great images that belong together.
One of the challenges of this project was that both inspirations are 2-D works. I have converted both works into my interpretation in 3-D.
