Ear's an Homage to Van Gogh

Inspiration Piece: Bedroom in Arles

Inspiration Artist: Vincent Van Gogh

Van Gogh is my favorite artist and I knew right off that I wanted to use his painting “Bedroom in Arles” as a starting point. All was going fine, until one day as I was silently thanking Mr. Van Gogh for his limited palette (and realizing he probably painted the whole thing in an hour or two) when I had a meltdown. I felt I had no business attempting to replicate a Van Gogh in any shape or form and almost threw the whole thing in the trash. There’s a reason he’s the master. Anyway, I didn’t touch it for a few weeks after that, until I was able to convince myself to quit being so dramatic and that I was simply paying homage.

When I had extra wall space, I decided what we couldn’t see and what would be hanging there was a study for “Starry Night”. While I made it in the wonky perspective that Van Gogh did, I had to photograph it at a slightly different angle to get it all in the picture.

Maybe if I had cut off my ear…
