I'm Melting

by Glennis McClellan for Re-Invent a Work of Art (2013)

Inspiration Piece: The Scream

Inspiration Artist: Edvard Munch

The entire piece is staged in the entry box. I used clay & sculpy to build the central figure. Ironically, the clay armature melted in the oven as I baked the sculpy. I painted the background on the canvas board provided, and I built the bridge out of pieces of wood and floral foam. Finally, I used the packing material to represent the sky in 3D, which is on fire. I painted all elements in the loose and painterly style of Munch.

The lack of a lower body and Munch's own description inspired me to depict the central figure melting in direct response to the environment. Munch said "Suddenly the sky turned blood-red...
Looking out across the flaming clouds that hung like blood and a sword over the blue-black fjord and town. My friends walked on – I stood there, trembling with fear. And I sensed a great, infinite scream pass through nature"
