She's a Non-Conformist

   by Jeanette Kennison for Re-Invent a Work of Art (2013)

Inspiration Piece: Dear Mrs Smythe Has Been Very ill

Inspiration Artist: Louise Pershing

I used the cardboard frames to draw attention and color. I used clay, sculpey, canvas cloth, rope and paint to create my art doll. I harvested thread from the canvas cloth to sew her dress. I carved a ditch in the large wood piece and glued the canvas to it to make the 'house'. The most fun thing was carving the floral foam into a couch!

It has bothered me for a while now that Louise Pershing’s
painting: “Dear Mrs. Smythe Has Been Very Ill” was
misinterpreted as a caricature in the book titled;
Art for Young America. (I’m sure it would trouble Mrs. Pershing
very little as she was misunderstood a lot).

Further frustration
I dare you to find a photo of this painting! I am fairly
certain the original is in color but the monotone copy I have
did lend itself well to my design.

After all this ‘caricature’ has been through, I feel she
deserves finding something uplifting when she charges through
that door instead of the implied doom of the original !
