Shift Happens: War to Peace

by Mary Ellen Taylor and Kevy Kennedy Smith for Re-Invent a Work of Art (2013)

Inspiration Piece: "Bird Bath Girl" Bronze Sculpture

Inspiration Artist: Sylvia Shaw Judson 1936

We used the inspiration piece to create a collage that reflects America's on-going struggle with war and peace. Using the canvas board as a base, we layered materials using Elmer's Glue. The figure, bowls, and flowers were shaped with Chavant modeling clay. The clay was cut from the block with a kitchen knife, heated with a hair dryer, rolled to desired thickness with a rolling pin. The figure was cut out and detailed using a toothpick and nut pick. These objects were painted with regular and metallic acrylic paints. Using scissors,, the tree trunks and medallions were cut from cardboard from the Mystery Build box and symbols of war and piece were applied with ink. Using a box cutter, the trees and bushes were cut from four pieces of thin wood and sponge painted. The enclosed rope was taken a part and used for the figure's sash and the flowers' pistils.
Additional materials were used for the back in order to add support and give a finished look. The plywood was glued to the canvas. Two blocks of hardwood were glued together and then glued to the plywood backing. Three coats of white gesso were applied. A summary of the inspiration piece was added.
