Sunday Afternoon Mobile

by Christine Lehto for Re-Invent a Work of Art (2013)

I sculpted with the steel wire to make the top of my mobile and I used the Friendly Plastic pellets to "fuse" the wire sections together. To make the tree on my piece, I put the shredded newsprint with some water into a blender and made a paper pulp that I mixed with the white glue. I added the paper pulp mixture over the floral foam for the tree shape. For the tree trunk I used a wooden dowel that I wrapped with some of the rope and attached the rope with some hot glue. To color the rope tree bark, I used some alcohol ink and then some acrylic paints to create the dots. I used the cardboard box material to cut out shapes for the people, monkey, dog and sailboat pieces. Then to cover over the cardboard I used the canvas fabric to cut out shapes for the front and the back of the pieces. I unraveled the rope to make "thread" to stitch the canvas pieces together. To make the dog, monkey, lady's umbrellas, and sailboat base I used the Sculpey polymer clay. I also used the wire to create the hangers and jump rings for each of the mobile pieces. After all of my pieces were stitched and/or sculpted I painted them with acrylic paints.

This piece was challenging and very fun to create. Each year I participate, I learn new ways to create things. I really enjoy the Mystery Build challenge.
