The Flowers Vendors

by Soranny Ramirez Caba for Re-Invent a Work of Art (2013)

Inspiration Piece: The Flower Carrier, 1935, oil and tempera on mesonite

Inspiration Artist: Diego Rivera

I used different techniques to create each elements of my project, for instance, to create the basket I cut one piece of hardwood in stripes, and then I put the stripes of hardwood in a bowl of water for one hour. After, I let the stripes of hardwood for one hour in water; I started to weave the basket and constantly wetting the hardwoods so they don’t get dry and start to broke. To put the basket together, I wanted to use the glue bottle provided in the kit, but it did not work, so I had to use something that can make the hardwood stay together and I decide to use staples. For the flowers I paper mache shredded newsprint and rolled until I get resemble of a flower. Inside the basket is also paper mache to fill it in. Also, for the basket, I cut half of the rope provided in the kit.
To create the figures in my projects, I used steel wire to make them stronger and stand free. Also I used chavant modeling clay to create the body and for the heads I used sculpey polymer clay. For the woman’s attire I used canvas cloth and shredded newsprint for the upper part of the blouse. For the man’s attire, I also used canvas cloth and to create his sandals I used pieces of shredded newsprint and for the soles I used a small piece of hardwood. For his hat, I used floral foam block and a piece of shredded newsprint. I glue the canvas cloth to the man and woman’s sculpture.
To create the base, I cut the part of the floral foam block in very thin slices and glue it to the oak plywood. For the background, I cut leave from the assorted hardwoods and glue it to the canvas board. When I see my project in the camera lens, I realized that the canvas board was not big enough for the background, so I added a piece of cardboard of the mystery build kit and I also cut out leaves of cardboard. When I put together all the elements of my project, the base and the background was too plain and it does not make a connection, so a paper mache shredded newsprint and placed it in on top of the base and the other part, I glued it to the background.

The materials that were used to create the elements of my project are the canvas board and cloth, chavant modeling clay, floral foam block, glue bottle, oak plywood, rope, shredded newsprint, steel wire, and sculpey polymer clay. I mostly used all the materials provided in the kit, except the friendly plastic pellets, wood block and wooden dowels. Although, I could have incorporated the materials I did not use.

I decide to choose this widely known painting of Diego Rivera because it symbolized the hard work of a man, as well as how the artist uses the bright colors. In “The Flower Carrier,” the man is going to work, selling his beautiful flowers to support his family and the woman is helping his husband to lift the enormous basket, and she may return home and take care of their family and the house. My re-interpretation of “The Flower Carrier” is that nowadays both the husband and the wife have to work to be able to support their family. Also, not only the husband and wife have to work, but also they have to take their children because they cannot afford to pay for a babysitter. This is why I decided to incorporate a child in my project; the woman is carrying a child on her back. Also, I decided to put the yellow sling to support the child, but not only for that but to represent that the woman have the hardest work to do, she have to work with her husband and in the same time take care of the child and be a housewife.
