The Surrealist Sculpture Garden

by Aaron Dotson for Re-Invent a Work of Art (2013)

Inspiration Piece: Archaeological Reminiscence of Millet's Angelus

Inspiration Artist: Salvador Dali

I was stoked it was a cardboard box. I have used that a lot before to make models for these small environments related to what I made here. I used card board for a lot of the main structure. I also cut up some of the canvas board. I made a model out of different materials first and used those pieces for templates for the mystery box. I also used wire and the newsprint strips plus cardboard for the main figure and the big arm and hand. I used green foam for the trees, clay for their bases. I also used clay for a lot of the smaller sculptures scattered about. I used sculpey and wire for most of the small figures walking about and for some of the other sculptures. I also used the plastic pellets to shape the egg forms. I unravelled the rope and glued that around a wire frame to create the "nest" form inside the main sculpture. I formed the wood pieces with saws, blades and a rotary tool. I used polyurethane to coat the wood, gesso and acrylic paint on the rest of the piece.

I grew up liking Dali's work and the "Archaeological Reminiscence..." was a good starting point for this piece. I wanted to create a surrealistic sculpture garden environment and was influenced by many of the Surrealist sculptors. I had a lot of fun playing with all the materials and think this mystery build thing is a pretty cool idea. Hope to see it around for long time to come.
