The Vegetable Platter

by Sabrina Mantle for Re-Invent a Work of Art (2013)

Inspiration Piece: Vertumnus

Inspiration Artist: Giuseppe Arcimboldo

I started by making a frame out of the wire, then layered clay onto it. Most of the head was made of the Chavant clay, but the grapes, leaves and most of the smaller fruit was made from the Sculpey. When I ran out of those items I used paper mache made from the newsprint for a few last leaves. The flowers are newsprint too. Everything is painted with acrylic paint. The only tools I used were paint brush and clay sculpting tools.

I have always loved the original painting and it was fun to try to recreate this in 3d. But rather than just doing the portrait as shown, I wanted to add the visual joke of the vegetable head being sliced in half to add a twist to it. I did find it very challenging to try to figure out how to handle all the areas you can't see in a 2d painting, and guessing what might fill the head was a quite a puzzler too. I never could come up with a way to make wheat heads with the materials I had, but I think he looks quite good even without those. I did take a few liberties with colors, deleted things and changed some of the vegetables from the original
