Green Bowl with Larkspur

by Deb Ginsburg for Re-Invent a Work of Art (2013)

Inspiration Piece: White Rose with Larkspur No. 1

Inspiration Artist: Georgia O’Keeffe

The bowl is made from the Chavant clay, which was melted and brushed onto a canvas covered wire armature. The flower inside is made from Sculpey. Each petal was shaped by hand – to get the edges to ruffle I pulled them out at the edges after the petal was shaped. I painted both bowl and flower petals with acrylic paint.

Georgia O’Keefe has always been one of my favorite artists. Perhaps that is because I grew up with a gardener. In any case, her flowers have always impressed me, so when I saw this topic I knew there was no doubt about what I would do! O’Keeffe’s early abstract work was all whorls and waves, which I have tried to replicate in the structure of the bowl. The flower that struck me in White Rose and Larkspur was the background flower, in part because of its color. The bright blues and purples remind me of the delphinium that bloom here in Alaska in the summer time. I like to think that she would have loved them as much as I do.
