caught in a web of nightmares

by Jaslie Ulloa and salem atalah, jacinda earwood for Build A Dream (2014)

We used a surplus amount of hot glue to form the web the young boy is caught in. As for the young boy we used wire to form the base and sculpted plastalina to make his shape and then coated him with green acrylic paint to act as his footed pajamas. Then for the base of the whole house we used the box supplied to us and cut it the shape we wanted for the house. Then, towards the bottom of the house,to get a brick affect we used the plastalina and painted that with acrylic. For the base of the chimney and the grass on the outside of the house we used the canvas and painted it with acrylic also on the bottom of the chimney like the house plastalina was used to form brick. As for the chimney smoke we wet the packing peanuts and stuck them together and painted them until it gave it a smokey looking affect. For the floor in the inside of the house we used the Masonite and lightly coated it with acrylic paint. Then for the scary giant spider we used wire to make the form and then layered the plaster until it stiffened in the shape we wanted and as for the little details for the spider, like the legs, eyes and vangs we used plastalina and after we painted the whole thing in a dark brownish black color.

The colors we used were a variety of dull and dark due to the fact of the idea of our project being a bad dream and we wanted to and the fear factor not only in the image and different sculptures but also in the colors and the background space all the way around. Other than that we are very thankful for the opportunity to be entered into this contest at all! We took the common fear of spiders in our society and made it into a nightmare anyone would dread. Also we were inspired by the famous series "The Lord of The Rings." We wanted to show that you can have good dreams and also bad dreams....nightmares.
