Remember That Day
by Maggie Zhang for Somewhere in Time (2015)
I had an idea in mind before I got the kit, but when I opened it, I thought of something different, but it had some of my original ideas in it. I thought it would be a good idea to illustrate more then one state in life. Which is my main idea in this piece. I wanted to depict some of the most important moments of life. I made the spiral stand on the wood of which I drew a spiral clock on as well. One of the most important moment in life is the day of birth, I thought a good representation of it would be the toys hanging down on top of the cradle. Another aspect of birth is birthdays, and one of the most important ones and the one that marks a change in life is the 18th birthday. So I used the wooden block and some clay to craft out a chocolate cake that looks like a gift box. When someone's 18, another decision that will change their life is colleges. I used the thin piece of paper and drew out a simple College acceptance letter. I imagined the time period to be the 50s, therefore used a little bit of clay to indicate the wax that may've been used during that period of time. Then I also had in mind to do a picture that tell the time period. I wanted to make it look a little old and dusty, thus I painted it of a color that's not commonly used. And I put strings, cotton on it to look like spider webs and dust. And I also put the date on the right hand corner. Pictures are an important aspect of "time". By taking a picture, we've basically recorded and stopped time. Which fits into my idea of the important moments in life. I also incorporated the idea of space into this piece because whenever I think of time, the space comes into mind, because it is infinite as well.
I was inspired by the book "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle. It doesn't relate to the content, but it inspired me because it made me pay attention to the little things that change life.
